That looks like a router that isn't set up right. You need to look at you router manual and make sure that the "port" and "port+1" are being routed to the server computer. It should be in your router manual under port forwarding.
Follow the instructions for a regular web server, except use the ports for your media server.

Port forwarding never works for me. I can't serve behind a router. Anyway, they said they were directly connected.

If it doesn't work toss your router....
Look, it's like this:
You have a WAN IP address let's just say 4.4.4.4
and your routers IP is 192.168.0.1
Your computers would normally be :
192.168.0.100
192 168.0.200
etc.
"ipconfig" (dos) or "ifconfig" (linux) will tell you who YOU are on the lan.
So let's say the server computer is 192.168.0.100 ...
You are on port 8000 and 8001. (and I'm not sure you have to do both, but I do).
Pop up your router at 192.168.0.1 and find port forwarding. It will ask you what port, you'll enter 8000. That's the WAN port. Then it will ask you for the LAN IP (192.168.0.100) and port (8000).... enter them.... hit apply .... restart the router for good measure .... oh... it'll ask TCP or UDP.... it's TCP ....
Do it again for port 8001.
What you are doing is sending WAN (internet) requests to the router on port 8000 to the LAN computer 192.168.0.100:8000 .... the server..
The thing I think people find confusing is that you have to tell the router WHICH computer on your lan you want to handle traffic on a WAN port. I mean how would it know?.

I understand the concept. I just find the config on my D-Link confusing. Maybe it's because I've been choosing UDP.
